Alpha chapter was recognized with numerous awards at the 145th Anniversary Convention in Chicago, IL Aug 6-9.
The active brothers were recognized as 1 out of 2 chapters nationally with the highest GPA of all fraternities on campus, won recognition for outstanding recruitment and for receiving accredidation (scoring 7 out of 9) for the 2008-9 year.
The alumni received awards as well. Chris "Norm" Baldauf A1487 was named Outstanding Chapter Advisor for the Northeast district. The AlphaBet was recognized as the best alumni newsletter across all chapters and colonies nationwide. David Fowkes A1275 was elected to a 2 year term as a Director on the Grand Lodge.
The 150th Anniversary convention in Troy was a major topic of discussion in Chicago. The convention passed a motion assessing each active brother $5 per semester and each alumni association $200 per year through 2014 to begin to fund a memorial structure at RPI. | Alphas Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity |
Posted: 2008-06-18 |

|
|
On April 5, 2008, 25 men from Alpha
Chapter of Theta Xi took part in a
special day of community service with
the local Habitat for Humanity. Actives,
associates and alumni from recent years
gathered to lend a helping hand. The project
took place in South Albany on Odell Street
where Habitat for Humanity was working
on adding three new housing additions to
the street. The brothers began leveling
the front lawn areas since the ground was
poorly leveled and needed to be as even
as possible for the work that day. The
brothers only faced one obstacle: a very
heavy looking, thick concrete slab. The
project contractors laughed when we said
we would get it out of the way, but they
soon saw how serious the men of Alpha
were when we moved the giant chunk.
After the early coffee break, the
group split in two separate groups. Half
the brothers continued working on digging
and shoveling to even the lawn, while the
other half began the assembly of the roof
for the housing. After lunch, 8-10 brothers
worked on the remaining half of the roof
that needed to be assembled. By the end of
the day, the roof was ready for the crane
to place it on the house and most of the
foundation was set level. It was a day in
where Alpha left a mark on the foundation
of a future house for a family in need.
Thanks to Bobby King A1519 for
helping coordinate the event with the
Actives.

Actives, associates and alumni gather for a group

| Website Update |
Posted: 2008-06-18 |
|
|
|
The work continues at www.alpha6294.com. While the original launch of the site was a success last year, we have spent this year finding ways to continually improve the functionality and service the site provides.
In the last year Ben Haynes and Matt Glaccum have gone out of their way to design new functions and implement them into the Alpha site. Some of these features include: the ability to post a photo of each brother in the brother database, tightening the system to allow for better sharing of information between Laurus, RPI and Theta Xi, and setting up alumni-update@alpha6294.com to send in alumni updates, job opportunities, etc.
In this same spirit we are looking to continue this work by improving the site in these ways in the coming months: adding an ecommerce solution that will enable us to sell apparel and additional items using both the Theta Xi and Alpha brands, setting up a brothers’ only wiki for knowledge sharing that we will call the Alphapedia, and exploring ways to improve our internal document storage and management.
As always we are receptive to any ideas our brothers may have that may allow us to provide them with the information they wish to have available via the website. We hope that you have all had the time to logon to the site and navigate through our increasingly vast online resource.
Finally, we would also like to mention that VIGCraft Art’s work on the Alpha Chapter site and our presentation at the 143rd Anniversary Convention gave us the opportunity to work with the Kappa Phi Chapter Alumni Association at Western Carolina University to redesign their website. You can find Kappa Phi online at: www.txwcu.com.

Congratulations to the newest members of the Cornell chapter who were initiated on May 4th! Inactive since 1968, the Theta Xi chapter at Cornell lives once again.
I wanted to drop you a quick note with the good news that we initiated 22 new Zeta brothers yesterday up at Ithaca. Actives and alumni from Alpha, Gamma, Eta, Iota, and Beta Omega joined to help run the first meeting of the Zeta lodge in 40 years. The National President, Jon Luning, and Grand Lodge Member Don Maringer were present along with National Representative Doctor B. New officers were installed. I've been named regional director responsible for Zeta. After initiation, I spent an hour with the e-board to discuss planning and moving forward.
You have a very energized, organized and excited group of men working to re-establish your active chapter. I think you are going to enjoy working with this group.

Boston Alumni Club Chris Blanc A1404 Our email address is: txclubofboston@gmail.com Possible summer activities include a minor league baseball game: Lowell Spinners or Pawtucket Red Sox. No details yet. Our next outing: Thursday, May 15, 2008 7:00PM Cornwall's 654 Beacon St, Boston, MA 02215 US Capital District Alumni Club Brad Spencer A1517 With everyone’s busy schedule last summer, it was hard to get local alumni to even one event last year. However, we did have 14 alumni and friends for a Tri-City Valley Cats game at Joe Bruno Stadium and we were treated to a pre-game barbecue. The Cats won on a beautiful July evening, the fireworks show post-game was great, and if you ask a few of the alumni who attended, the giant bouncy pit was a blast as well. This summer, I plan on organizing at least 3 different events at various locations around the Capital Region. Possible events include: A second Tri-City Valley Cats game Albany Conquest (arena football 2) game Barbecue at a local alumni residence Trip to Grafton Lake “Alive at Five” in downtown Albany A day at the Saratoga Race Track Details on the first event, tentatively for early June, will be sent out soon. To make sure you’re notified, e-mail me at bspencer1517@gmail.com, or call me at 518-258-7107. See you this summer! New York City Alumni Club David Fowkes A1275 Our last meeting was held in mid-March at Mustang Harry's 2 blocks South of Penn Station. Approximately 25 alumni joined a group of Columbia students and discussed potentially re-chartering our Epsilon Chapter. Our next meeting will be held on June 4th; see details below. |
The 6294 Dinner is scheduled for April 26, 2008. After way too long of a hiatus . . . 6294 in the Chapterhouse is back. This is one that you just can't miss - plan your weddings and conceptions accordingly. Over 60 Alumni and guests are already signed up to join the Brothers of Alpha in Troy.To RSVP, please visit our 6294 Evite and let us know if you are returning this year. OLYMPIC REGISTRATION OPEN: John Reinhardt A1358 and Mike Petronino A1359 are organizing the Theta Xi Olympic games for that weekend. For more details about the games, please look at www.zoo-brew.com/olympics.html and get registered now!
SUPPORT THE OLYMPICS: To provide a quality Olympic experience, John and Mike need your help to help fund some needed work at the chapterhouse. Please consider making a contribution today to support the purchase of a new foosball table, dart board and pool table accessories; repairs are also needed for the pool table as well. John and Mike are looking to raise $2000 for this purpose. The Alumni Association has recently had to allocate significant money for the purchase of a new refrigerator for the Actives and cannot fund games equipment alone. Any funds left over will be applied toward the purchase of a new foyer rug and other pre-6294 improvements as needed. Beyond that, donations are to be put toward the upcoming summer work week projects and other Association expenses. IMPORTANT: You MUST let the Association know that you wish your donation (or a portion thereof) go toward this campaign by contacting anyone involved in the fundraising or use the e-mail address provided below. If you are attending the 6294 dinner, the first $100-single/$150-couple donation you send in go toward paying the dinner expense. Any donations above that amount can be applied toward this targeted fundraising but, again, you must let the Association know of your wishes. HOW TO DONATE: Visit the Olympics webpage at www.zoo-brew.com/olympics.html or go to the Alumni website for more options at www.alpha6294.com/donations.php. E-MAIL US: If you decide to help out by donating, please send an e-mail to alumni-update@alpha6294.com and let us know how you want your money spent. CONSIDERATION: The improvements that this Olympics fundraiser will fund will be very beneficial for future rush events and alumni activities as well; it will also improve the look of the public areas of the House.

Theta Xi National has begun to explore the possibility of holding Theta Xi's 150th Anniversary Convention in Troy, New York during the Summer of 2014. Executive Director Jim Vredenburgh recently toured Capital District facilities to review viable options. Representatives met with RPI officials to explore the possibility of utilizing RPI facilities (lodging and conference) to hold the event on campus. National President Jon Luning and Grand Lodge Member Don Meringer toured campus during the February 23rd District Leadership Academy and discussed Memorial Seat re-dedication ideas. It is too early to declare victory but initial momentum is positive at both National and with RPI.

A report from Chapter Advisor Chris "Norm" Baldauf A1487 on the weekend activities
On Friday, we had a faculty and staff mixer that two Deans attended... It is my strong belief that we should hold another one in the Spring. We also initiated Dr Boylen (A1593). He was more than honored and the ceremony and ensuing celebration went off without a hitch. [Nine alumni also returned to Troy for the initiation ceremony and welcomed Brother Boylen.] On Saturday, we had an Alumni / Parents BBQ that saw attendance from about 18 alum, mostly from the 1960's (I will include names at a later time). They were all impressed by the work that is being done at the chapter house and had distinctly positive feedback about the house (building and brothers). .... We also had the parents of about 10 members (3 associate members) come to the event and give good feedback about the house. I encouraged them (especially the associate members' parents) to contact me if they had any concerns and that I would be happy to address them. They said they were more than satisfied with their son being involved in our organization. Let's definitely plan on doing all of this again next year. Alumni who returned to Troy We had 25 alumni come back: Gary Peterson '62 A964 Ken Wilson '63 A973 August Bill Gutheim '63 A982 Ray Rettberg '63 A983 Rob Nilsson '63 A984 Frank Fischer '64 A986 John Van Gelder '64 A999 Bill McCarthy '64 A1001 Pat Mahoney '64 A1008 Mike Gass '65 A1011 Hank Malafronte '65 A1020 Rick Gordon '65 A1024 Gerry Bushey '68 A1056 Roland Cavalier '68 A1060 Dick Greenlaw '68 A1063 Vinny Spitzer '69 A1082 David Fowkes A1275 Paul Vescio A1295 Chris Baldauf A1487 Jamie Smith A1492 Paul Dalton A1512 Brad Spencer A1517 Bobby King A1519 Justin Scaduto A1537 Jake Woudenberg A1562 Dr. Chuck Boylen A1593

Alpha's next door neighbor is no stranger to the Brothers who have called 1490 Sage Avenue home. In a long overdue ceremony, Doctor Chuck Boylen was initiated this past Friday, October 19th. Check out the latest issue of the Alphabet to learn more about A1593.
Local alumni welcome Brother Boylen to the ranks of Theta Xi. See more pictures.
"It's fantastic to see a neighbor and friend who has been so supportive of our Chapter for so long finally be recognized for his unsung contributions to Theta Xi. Congratulations, Brother Boylen." -- Chris "Norm" Baldauf A1487, Chapter Advisor "Congratulations are in order for Dr. Boylen. For years we've called him"mentor," "advocate" and "friend." Now we call him "brother." His initiation is long overdue and well deserved!" -- Tom Doherty A1448, Alumni Association President

| Second work weekend success |

Big thanks: Part Deux Another round of thanks to the alumni who made it up for the second work weekend: Dane LeBlanc Dave Fowkes Dave Schuettner Chris Baldauf John Viggiano Jake Woudenberg Justin Scaduto Mickey Mossaidis Ben Rosenthal Tom Doherty Chris Riismandel Chris Blanc Jay McGlothlin Alex Pelli Brad Spencer If someone is missing from the list, let me know so we include you. Again, we had another member of the Class of ’89 in Dave Schuettner joining Dave Fowkes as the two really old guys showing the younger brothers how it’s done. Reports of an even older alum in Dane LeBlanc ‘80 coming back to lend a hand are true! See Dane’s skill at tackling window pane work. It should be said that the Alumni noted the Actives taking ownership of some of the work projects to help make the weekend a success. A very big thanks should also be given to Norm Baldauf and Dave Fowkes for organizing the work weekends as the Actives get ready for the Fall Term. Second work weekend projects accomplished - Finished painting a lot of the outside with the lift
- Painted the basement floor
- Removed 25-30 windows from the frames, repaired (made them open and/or close or hang right on the house) and re-glazed countless panes
- Replaced over 50 broken window panes
- Replaced all electrical outlets and covers on the first floor (replacing painted over outlets)
- Painted a lot of the outside windows
- Painted the kitchen
- Painted the shed
- More landscaping
- Finished paneling the inside of the rear airlock
- Repaired all lighting in basement, replaced 3 broken light switches
- Rewired the electrical feed to the outside sign
Plumbing WorkA plumber was hired to take care of the urinals. He supplied and installed the urinal on the first floor and will be doing the same for the third floor urinal which needs to be replaced. The second floor urinal was able to be brought back online without the need for replacement. The plumber also performed some minor boiler maintenance. New photos Check out the photos here: http://alpha6294.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=1448 Again, the photos are not very well organized but you will get the general picture of the progress made. We’ll be posting a before, during and after presentation of the major projects here on the website soon. We need 5 guysAs of the last donations update, we are still short of our donor goal of 150. We are 5 donations shy of that. If you haven’t donated before, send in that $10, $25 or $50 or whatever you feel comfortable with. Look here for details on donating: http://alpha6294.com/donations.php Again, every donation that comes in helps. Extra money was spent on getting as much work done as possible before the start of the school year and the all important Rush period. This means that your donations are key to help pay for the repairs done. Please contribute today!

| Work Weekend Update |

A big thanks First off, a big thanks to the alumni who lent a hand this weekend: Ralph Buoniconti Dave Fowkes Dale Winkler Chris Baldauf Jamie Smith Paul Dalton Mike Champagne Bobby King Jake Woudenberg Tim Wise Mike Baron Rohun Gholkar Jay McGlothlin Alex Pelli Mickey Mossaidis Mark Black If someone is missing from the list, Fowkes didn’t have you down as being there so blame him. Then let me know so we include you. Dave was not the only ‘89 guy present. Dale and Ralph joined the other alumni in volunteering their time over the weekend to get some much needed house repairs done. First weekend projects accomplished From what I understand, all the Actives were there to take part in all the fun stuff including: · Whole first floor painted · Rented 50 foot lift for a day, repaired rotten facia board and re-hung gutter, painted a lot of the outside wood (gables, headers over windows) · Took down and disposed of 4 dead/dying trees · Installed new tile floor in the 1st floor bathroom · Painted the basement bar room · Installed paneling in the back airlock · Weeded and mulched all of the outside beds · Sanded, stained and varnished the front door · Significant repairs to the stairs including structural and cosmetic (replaced all missing ballisters and post caps including decorative molding all in Oak to match original) · Built a new door to replace the rotten shed door · Re-sanded the front walk (after thorough weeding) See the photos Don’t believe it? Check out the photos here: http://alpha6294.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=1449 Particularly see the ones of the boom lift in action as well as the new look of the house side facing RSE. There are also some group photos near the end of the album. The photos are not very well organized but you will get the general picture of the activities and the results. Pay particular attention to the peaks and dormers that have been painted. Once the second work weekend is finished, we’ll look to post a before, during and after presentation of the major projects. What’s next for this weekend So what is left to do? Here is what is on the list currently: · Rent the lift for one more day to finish painting the gable wood (first coat some, second coat the rest) · Finish repairing and re-paint the shed · repair and re-paint the BBQ · Finish trimming out the airlock paneling and seal it · Get the urinals repaired/installed (scheduled the plumber for early next week) · Work to clean up the bathrooms as time and money allow · Paint the basement floor · Electrical work (repair/replace outlets and switches as needed for repair and for aesthetics) Helping out We are looking for anyone who would like to help out with the second work weekend. There is still a lot left to do. Even if you are a maybe about making it, talk to Norm (chris.baldauf@gmail.com) or Dave (david.fowkes@db.com) about it. Details will also be posted in the news section: http://alpha6294.com/news.php Can’t make it but would still like to help out? As of the last donations update, we are still short of our donor goal of 150. We are about 10 donations shy of that right now. If you haven’t donated before, send in that $10, $25 or $50 or whatever you feel comfortable with. Look here for details on donating: http://alpha6294.com/donations.php Again, every donation that comes in helps. We are down two guys that were expected to be living in the house this year. That means two less contributors to the upkeep of the house as well as the mortgage payments that the Alumni Association has to make. This means that your donations are key to getting repairs done especially with the House at low but rising numbers. So please don’t think about it, just zoo it.

During the RPI Greek Awards of Excellence ceremony, held on April 14th, 2007, the members of the Alpha Chapter were recognized for being the best chapter on campus when it comes to "National Organization Relationships and Alumni / Advisor Participation". This award is a testament to the hard work of the many Alumni members of the Alpha Chapter that have had a hand in restoring the pride and high ideals of Theta Xi to RPI. Overall, the Chapter received a 4 out of 5 star rating, with only 6 Greek organizations scoring higher. Many congratulations are in order to all who were involved.

| Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2007 |
Posted: 2007-03-15 |
|
|
|

The time is now to show Members of Congress that the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2007 is worthy of their support! AFA is once again joining other higher education associations and interfraternal organizations in a grassroots letter-writing campaign in support of this legislation. This year the letter-writing process has been streamlined and coordinated by the Capital Fraternal Caucus.
The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act would make a simple change in the tax code that would go a long way in improving the condition and the safety of fraternity and sorority student housing facilities. Specifically, the bill would allow tax-deductible charitable contributions made to fraternity and sorority educational foundations to be used for infrastructure improvements and the installation of fire detection and prevention systems in local not-for-profit student housing.
In less than three minutes you can send a letter to your Senators and Representative, adding your voice to the thousands of other fraternity and sorority members reaching out to Members of Congress this month.
Using the online template, it’s easy for you to write your Members of Congress and to engage your students, Vice President for Student Affairs, chapter and house corporation advisors and others in this process as well. It will make a difference! We urge you to learn about the Act and how you can participate in this critical effort.
In the last Congress, thanks in part to your efforts, the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act garnered its greatest support yet. This year, the collective efforts of many can ensure that this legislation is finally passed.
In order for your letter to be considered during Congressional discussion, please send your letters by April 1, 2007.
